This experience brings together ukulele players at all levels for a fun and educational week of playing ukulele in an ensemble. There is a part for you, whether you are an experienced ukulele ensemble player, or you have never played music from a score before.
We'll play music written on scores with standard music notation and tablature; some songs will be taught from song sheets. You'll be picking single-note melodic lines and harmony parts with some strumming, some fingerpicking and some singing. Note: music is arranged for ukuleles with a low G string—see the FAQ for more information.
The repertoire includes a wide range of musical styles and eras including classical, folk, jazz, world, and pop.
The group will be divided into two classes:
You will spend part of the day in your class learning the picking parts for your section, and part of the day with the full ensemble playing your picking part in the larger group.
The Beginner Ukulele and Baritone Ukulele class is best for players who have some experience playing ukulele but are newer to playing notated music for ukulele, as well as those playing baritone ukuleles.
The Intermediate and Advanced Ukulele class is best for players who already have some experience playing notated music for ukulele. You should be able to read and play from written scores in the keys of C and F.
The goal is to prepare and perform an end-of-week concert for the enjoyment of the Haliburton community.
Note: this program is not meant for absolute beginners—you should have some ukulele playing experience before attending. Please get in touch with us at pluckonukulele AT gmail DOT com if you have any questions!
YOUR INSTRUCTORS

Brenna MacCrimmon is a singer of Turkish and Balkan folksongs who has traveled to study, perform and teach in Canada, the US, Europe, Turkey and Japan. She has collaborated with many Turkish musicians including Selim Sesler, Muammer Ketencoglu and psychedelic alt folk rockers Baba Zula. In Toronto she sings and plays with Turkwaz, a vocal quartet specialized in the music of the Eastern Mediterranean and the Balkans; Greek-Turkish band Meltemi; and Gaitan Macedonian folk trio.
Intrigued by the note “with ukulele accompaniment” on the vintage sheet music she was exploring, Brenna picked up ukulele, began adapting it to Turkish folksongs, and never looked back. She currently teaches privately and is co-organizer of “Ukulele Wang Dang Doodles” which are held semi-annually on Toronto Island. She also leads the Ukulele Orchestra of Toronto's baritone section.

Eve Goldberg is a compelling songwriter and interpreter whose watercolour voice and solid instrumental style on guitar and ukulele has made her a favourite with audiences across North America. Her intimate performances, both solo and with the duo Gathering Sparks, draw on folk, blues, country, bluegrass, and jazz influences. She is the founder and conductor of the Ukulele Orchestra of Toronto, and teaches online classes from her studio in Toronto. She has performed and taught at the James Hill Ukulele Institute (BC and ON), Port Townsend Ukulele Festival (WA), Midwest Ukulele and Harmonica Camp (MI), Strathmore UkeFest (MD), Ashokan Ukefest (NY), Bayfield Ukulele Festival (ON), Haliburton School of Art and Design (ON), and more—and is in demand as a teacher and performer at ukulele events far and wide.
