In September 2007 the world saw powerful images of monks and nuns demonstrating in Burma (Myanmar) on the evening news, and reacted with dismay as their peaceful protests were brutally suppressed by the military dictatorship there. Eve wrote the "The Streets of Burma" as a way of bearing witness to what happened. She was honoured when Amnesty International Canada used the song as part of its campaign to free U Gambira, one of the monks who was detained following the protests.
