Love It Like Fool: Celebrating the Songs of Malvina Reynolds

This weekend my friend Aileen Vance organized a Facebook virtual concert in tribute to the incomparable Malvina Reynolds. Probably most known for the songs "Little Boxes" and "A Little Drop of Rain," she was a prolific, insightful, audacious, powerful, funny, and tender writer whose songs still have much to teach us.

You can see all the performances from this weekend at the Facebook event here.

Here is my contribution, "God Bless The Grass" and the introduction I wrote on my Facebook post.

As I recorded this song today, demonstrations were taking place all over the U.S. and Canada to protest systemic racism and recent killings of people of colour. The deaths of George Floyd, Amaud Arbery, Breonna Taylor are three more examples in a long and appalling history of racism in North America that we all need to grapple with.

Sometimes it seems like change will never come and the institutions that perpetuate inequality and injustice are impenetrable. But as Malvina wrote in this song, even the tender grass has the power to buckle concrete.

Black Lives Matter.

God Bless The Grass.
